There has been a guilty verdict in the trial of Christopher Small and Christopher Verity connected to the 2018 drug-induced death of Kevin MacFarlane.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland says the verdict was reached after a three week-long trial in Cape May County Superior Court.

Last October, authorities say the body of Avalon resident Kevin MacFarlane was found and an investigation revealed he died as a result of a drug overdose which then lead to the arrest of Small and Verity.

Within days on the one year anniversary of MacFarlane's body being found, 41-year-old Christopher R. Small of Marmora and 37-year-old Christopher M. Verity of Dennisville were both found guilty of strict liability for drug-induced death and conspiracy to commit distribution of a controlled dangerous substance. Small was additionally found guilty of distribution of a CDS; Verity was also found guilty of two counts of endangering an injured victim.

Sutherland's office says both Small and Verity could be sentenced to 10 to 20 years in state prison along with consecutive five year terms for the other charges, however, both are extended term-eligible and they could be sentenced to life in prison.
