Is This Tiny Village New Jersey’s Creepiest Abandoned Town?

There are so many interesting places right here in New Jersey that you may not even know about, including a town that many consider to be the creepiest abandoned ghost town in the whole state.

It shouldn't come as a surprise to you that the town that gets a title like that is in the Pine Barrens, and this particular town is a really interesting one with an unusual story.

Let's start with this tidbit about the town. No one has lived there in nearly 100 years. That's right, the town's last resident left in 1936, according to Only In Your State, and prior to that, the town had some strange disappearances occur within its borders.

As the story goes, a couple, John Chininiski and his wife lived there, and one day, she just disappeared. Not too long after that, he vanished as well, and as if that wasn't creepy enough, only one set of skeletal remains was recovered.

The town name is even strange. It's called Ong's Hat in Pemberton Township. Some historians say it's because a resident named Jacob Ong got angry, threw his hat and it got stuck in a tree.

Others think the actual town name was once Ong's Hut, named for the rest area it once had. Either way, this abandoned town is certainly unique.

Even when the town was alive, sources say there were only a few structures in it, so it's never been bustling. But now it's abandoned, and very, very creepy. Visit if you dare.
