A family member of two young sisters confirmed that the girls perished in the massive blaze that tore through the 300 block of S. 4th Street in Millville late Wednesday night.

The family member told 6ABC that the children were his nieces, Valery and Sammy. The girls were 9 and 13 years old. Their parents and other siblings escaped the blaze.

An adult was injured in the fire and is expected to be okay. That person is described as a family member of the children.

The sisters had been unaccounted for in the wake of the fire on Thursday until their bodies were found in the rubble left behind.

Their bodies were found in the basement of one of the homes impacted, Millville Commissioner of Public Safety C. Kirk Hewitt told Townsquare Media.

Massive Fire Leaves Over 20 People Displaced

More than 20 people have been displaced by the fire that destroyed six homes in four buildings on the block.

The fire broke out at about 11 pm Wednesday and burned two duplexes down to the foundation and badly damaged two single-family homes.

A ruptured gas line fed the fire for several hours, making it more intense, allowing the flames to jump from house to house.

"Until the South Jersey gas arrived and was able to turn the gas off to all the houses, we did have a gas-fed fire that made it a little bit more difficult," Chief John Wettstein, with the Millville Fire Department, told 6ABC.

Social media posts on the Millville, NJ, Facebook page are filled with appeals for people who have lost everything in the fire.

Many community members are offering clothing, food, and help to anyone impacted by the fire.

Fire Hydrant on the Block Did Not Work

Firefighters were hampered by a non-functioning fire hydrant on the block.

One firefighter said they had to run 800 feet of hose -- more than 2.5 football fields -- to another hydrant to fight the fire.

Millville Mayor Benjamin Romanik says the hydrant issue will be investigated.

There is no word yet on the cause of this fire, though officials said there are no signs yet that it's suspicious.
