Atlantic City, NJ Coast Guard Aiding Baltimore Bridge Collapse Rescue Efforts

The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station out of Atlantic City, New Jersey has reportedly been called on to assist in rescue efforts after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland.

Baltimore Bridge Collapses After Being Struck by Ship

Approximately 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, a cargo ship that had lost power in the Patapsco River collided with a pillar of the bridge sending it crashing into the harbor waters below.

Although a warning was sent by the vessel prior to the collision, Patch.com reports, authorities were not able to stop all vehicles from crossing the bridge. Several vehicles, their drivers, and a crew of construction workers reportedly plunged into the river. Two people have been rescued so far at least half a dozen others remain unaccounted for.

NJ Coast Guard Crew Sent to Help Rescue Victims of Baltimore Bridge Collapse

A MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City has been sent to the scene of the bridge collapse to help rescue and/or recover victims.

The Atlantic City team joins boat crews from Curtis Bay, Maryland and Annapolis, Maryland already assisting Baltimore Coast Guard.

Speaking with the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Fire Department called the effort a 'dire emergency', saying, “Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people.”

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was built over Baltimore, Maryland in 1977. It is named for the man who wrote America's National Anthem, 'Star Spangled Banner'.
