Major League Baseball's 'hit king', Pete Rose, has passed away at the age of 83.

Rose, who played in Philadelphia from 1979-1983, was the missing piece for the Phillies, helping them win the 1980 World Series. The Phillies signed Rose to a four-year, $3.2-million deal, making him the highest-paid player in sports.

During his time in Philadelphia, Rose played in 745 games, hitting .281, and collecting 826 hits, making the All-Star game in four of his five seasons with the Phillies.

After his time in Philadelphia, he played in Montreal for one season before landing back with the Cincinnati Reds, where he started his career and played for 19 seasons.

With the Reds, Rose became one of the best hitters in the game, collecting 3,358 hits, and winning a Rookie of the Year and MVP Award. He later became a player-manager for the Reds, where he compiled a record of 426–388 as a manager.

The 17-time All-Star and three-time World Series Champion, ended his career with an MLB best 4,256 hits, hitting .303 during his 24 seasons.

Rose retired from baseball on November 11, 1986.

Of course, Rose's story doesn't end there.

He was banned from the game for betting on baseball games, which he denied for years, and is ineligible to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. After years of denial, Rose finally admitted to betting on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds and admitted to betting on Reds games, but never bet on the Reds to lose.
