Why This South Jersey Community Is Approving Two New Cannabis Shops

Heading into 2026, there were only three Cannabis Dispensaries in New Jersey's Southernmost county. Even though Recreational marijuana sales have become a Billion Dollar industry over the last few years, Cape May County had very few options for consumers.

The Retail Cannabis Industry offers a unique tax revenue opportunity for local municipalities. This is why South Jersey communities like Upper Township are moving forward with getting their own marijuana retail outlet in a high-traffic area.

In response, another South Jersey Municipality is making an unprecedented move to become a regional leader in Cannabis Retail.

This Cape May County Community Planning To Triple Their Cannabis Outlets

At their most recent council meeting, Lower Township Mayor Frank Sippel confirmed plans to become the first municipality in New Jersey's southernmost county to have multiple Cannabis Dispensaries.

The first Lower Township Cannabis Retail Outlet is Sea & Leaf on Bayshore Road, inside the North Cape May Shopping Center just a few minutes' drive from the Cape May-Lewis Ferry. According to local media reports, there are two applicants for a new retail marijuana outlet, and Lower Township officials are proceeding with plans to approve both.

The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission approved licenses for GreenCoast Dispensary LLC and LT Retail LLC to open retail outlets in Lower Township. NJ Regulators have been very strict in their approval process, so for both business operators to get approvals already is a major positive for Lower Township to feel good about green-lighting both to open in the near future.

Lower Township officials also plan on approving plans for the two new Cannabis Dispensaries to offer delivery services, something that is unique to the South Jersey Community located within a short drive from Cape May and Wildwood.

With New Jersey having almost 500 cannabis dispensaries, adding two more in Lower Township and one new retail outlet in Upper Township will give Cape May County a grand total of six in NJ's southernmost county.
