Lightning strike damages century-old Cape May, NJ, City Hall
A heavy thunderstorm Friday morning damaged Cape May's city hall.
The Cape May Police Department says at about 8:20, a storm that flooded streets across the city produced a significant amount of lightning and one of those bolts hit the century-old building on the 600 block of Washington Street.
According to authorities, "the lighting strike at City Hall created damage," and the facility, which houses numerous government agencies, was closed all day Friday to assess the situation.
A Doppler radar image from around that time shows a heavy storm sitting over lower Cape May County.
The city has not released any information about the extent of the damage, however, the building is scheduled to be open Monday during normal business hours.
No injuries were reported.
According to capemay.com, Cape May City Hall was built in 1917 and was originally Cape May High School. It became the seat of city government in 1961. The original city hall, built in 1899 at the corner of Washington and Franklin, was torn down in 1970.
