Longtime 6ABC/Philadelphia meteorologist announces his final broadcast
A longtime meteorologist at Channel 6 in Philadelphia — a true favorite — has announced he is leaving the station and his final broadcast is just a few weeks away.
Of course, we're talking about Chris Sowers.
If you've missed how all of this has unfolded, here's a quick recap.
Early last month, Sowers took to Facebook and posted the following very simple message:
I have huge career news coming! I’ll be making an announcement soon.
As expected, social media went nuts. In under 24 hours, 1,600+ comments were posted, many wondering exactly what one of the top meteorologists in the city was up to.
The next day, Sowers announced he was leaving and moving to Florida to work at a TV station in West Palm Beach (it's hard to believe someone would choose palm trees over the Schuylkill Expressway...).
His statement read in part,
My family and I have come to the extremely difficult decision to move on from WPVI 6abc. A huge opportunity has presented itself and I will be joining the talented WPTV weather team in West Palm Beach, Florida in October. This is an opportunity for me to finally move off of weekends. I'm excited to work in one of the busiest weather markets in the entire country! You have no idea how difficult of a decision this was for me.
As longtime 6ABC viewers know, very few people ever leave the station. It's an institution. That's what has made Action News such a mainstay in the region. The people you watched on TV when you were growing up are the same people that you are watching as an adult now.
So, for Sowers to announce his departure from WPVI, it must have been a very good opportunity.
The good news is Sowers will be on Channel 6 through the end of the month.
Per his latest Facebook post, the weekend of September 28th and 29th will be his last in Philadelphia.
Sowers will debut in the Sunshine State around October 18th and he says one of his first assignments will be broadcasting live from a Taylor Swift concert in Miami.
Not a bad way to start a new job, eh?
