Even though I "work in the media," I'm not totally excited about politics.

As a matter of fact, I'm pretty ambivalent about politics.

Leave it to someone else.

One of the political things I really hate - especially at this time of the year - are political campaign signs.

Really hate.

I see them as a distraction, a true littering of our communities. Pulling up to a busy intersection and seeing sign after sign stuck in the ground just makes me shake my head.

These signs aren't telling me anything about the candidates. Often it's just names in red or blue, with a stupid slogan or a predictable photo.

Truth be told, in my past life, when I was in my early 20's I had the stupid idea to run for a local political office. I hated the idea of the political sign. Was my background and preparation for the position going to be fairly represented in a 4 foot by 3-foot sign stuck into someone's front yard?

(Yeah, I lost.)

Anyway, it takes a lot to get me to notice and sign (and actually care.)

Well, a sign got me this weekend in Hammonton!

Actually, the signs are probably in and around my neighborhood, I've probably just seen them as "white noise."

This sign, though, was all alone on the side of Route 206 and it got my attention.

It was "Jack and Diane."

"A little ditty `bouts Jack and Diane...."

It's like the John "Cougar" Mellencamp song! (Mellencamp dropped the "Cougar: part of his name shortly after the song became a hit in the early 1980s.)

I was young and in college when the song was out, so it's a very memorable part of my "growing up."

So, the bold Jack and Diane lettering made an impact on me and made me notice it. Finally, a political sign that made me notice!

Jack and Diane are, of course, Jack Ciattarelli and Diane Allen, candidates for governor and lieutenant governor in New Jersey.  (Honestly, I pay so little attention to politics,  I was unaware of the name of Ciattarelli's running mate's name.)

So, how big was the impact of Jack and Diane's political sign on me? Will it persuade me to vote for them?

Only if they promise to ban all political signs when elected...
