Food insecurity is a recurring and serious issue, not just here in South Jersey, but everywhere.

Believe it or not, it's probably a bigger deal in the southern part of the Garden State than that region's own residents even realize. As a matter of fact, the Community Food Bank of South Jersey says that almost twelve percent of residents in Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland Counties don't know where or when they're going to get to eat next.

You've probably heard this line more than once before, but it's just too good not to mention when talking about this topic. Tim McGraw's character Sean Tuohy from the movie The Blind Side delivers an amazing speech about how you feel when you have no idea where your next meal is coming from. He said that when you don't know when's the next time you'll get to eat, you'd be surprised how much time passes because that's all you think about.

Luckily, there are people and organizations here in South Jersey that try to do what they can to combat this issue. The latest is the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society in Hammonton, Atlantic County. With the help of the sheriff, the NJ State Police, the Community Food Bank of NJ, and a few other sponsors, they're hosting a drive-through food distribution event in October.

On Thursday, October 6th, people can drive up to the society's headquarters between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to pick up a bag of groceries completely free of charge. You're encouraged to share the flyer sent out by the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page to family and friends in an effort to spread the word.
