Cops in Atlantic City say it was a 77-year-old woman who was struck and killed on Route 40 Tuesday night.

The Atlantic City Police Department says their officers responded to the eastbound lanes of Route 40 at mile marker 62.4 for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Arriving officers found a 77-year-old woman dead at the scene. They say the driver of the vehicle, 56-year-old Michael Ortiz of Atlantic City, stayed at the scene and he was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division with non-life threatening injuries.

According to police,

An initial investigation by conducted by Officer Eric Knuttel of the Accident Investigations Section revealed the pedestrian was crossing Route 40 in the left lane. It is believed that she was going to attempt to climb over the concrete median barrier to cross the roadway when she was struck.

Next of kin has not been located. The cause of the crash is under investigation with assistance from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
