Bomb Squad Handles Another Unexploded Ordinance in the Cape May Area

Yet another unexploded ordinance was found in the Cape May area Wednesday morning.

The Lower Township Police Department says one of their officers was flagged-down by a resident in North Cape May just before noon Wednesday who said he found an unexploded ordinance in his back yard.

Cops say the resident was digging in his back yard when he unearthed an old unexploded 75mm military projectile.

Additional officers arrived on the scene, according to a report, in the area of the 1600 block of Washington Boulevard in North Cape May. The road was closed and surrounding residents were evacuated.

The LTPD says, "Contact was made with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Atlantic City Bomb Squad, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; and the USAF EOD unit. A short time later a technician group from the Atlantic City Bomb Squad arrived on scene, removed the ordinance, and safely disposed of it in a safe location."

Once the area was deemed safe, residents were able to return home.

This latest unearthing of an explosive device comes less than a week after a resident on Elmira Street in Cape May, who was having a yard cleared of debris and landscaped, found two artillery shells. Those devices were were safely denoted on the beach in Cape May.
