New York Eliminating Gas Tax Until End Of 2022; Will New Jersey Be Next?
I never thought I would be saying this but I think it is time for me to move to New York.
I know. Who would have ever thought?
The overly-crowded state has actually outdone New Jersey for the first time in like, EVER!
According to News12.com, it has just been announced that New York will be suspending their gas tax until, at the very least, the end of 2022.
This means that New York drivers will be saving approximately 16 cents per gallon. Officials are estimating that this change will save New York City drivers a whopping $600 million dollars by the end.
This news comes after gas prices surpassed yet another record yesterday,
At the risk of sounding like a bratty teenager: NO FAIR!
I hope you are thinking what I am thinking: What does this mean for New Jersey?
Will the Garden State adopt a new policy? If so, when will it be put into effect?
Just to put it into perspective on why New Jersey NEEDS this same policy, our gas tax is up to 42.4 cents per gallon. That is the fourth highest in the nation. Wow.
Unfortunately, I don't have the most solid update on this topic just yet.
Here is the statement released by Governor Phil Murphy's office according to News12.com:
"While the state is currently reviewing options to provide relief for residents facing rising inflation, [Gov. Murphy] continues to support federal action to temporarily waive the gas tax."
At this point, I am not really understanding what there is to review.
Gas prices are the most expensive they have ever been in history and only continue to increase on a regular basis.
People's pay are not increasing with it.
SOMETHING needs to give here.
When people have to spend a larger portion of their money on gas, that means other things have to fall by the wayside.
This means they are going out to eat less. They are going shopping less. And overall, our economy slowly but surely starts to decline.
Chant it with me.
DOWN WITH GAS TAX!
DOWN WITH GAS TAX!!
DOWN WITH GAS TAX!!!
DOWN WITH GAS TAX!!!!
And I am not even saying to make this change permanently. Let's start with no gas tax in New Jersey until at least the end of the year so people can get things in order.
Pretty please? I'll be your bestest friend!
This discussion is stressing me out. I need a mimosa.
