Prosecutor: Absecon, NJ Man Indicted for Attempted Murder in 2020 Home Invasion
An Atlantic County Grand Jury has handed up a 12-count indictment, which includes an attempted murder charge, against a man from Absecon in connection to a home invasion in Buena last year.
Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Cary Shill says 44-year-old Michael Hayes, who was recently indicted on drug-related charges for a separate incident, was indicted on attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and weapon-related charges.
Authorities say during the early morning hours of September 15th, 2020, Hayes and another unidentified man, "both armed with handguns, approached the victim outside the victim’s house and demanded money. Hayes and the unidentified man then duct-taped the victim’s hand behind his back and forced him inside his house and up the stairs into his bedroom. One suspect stayed with the victim in his room while the other suspect kept lookout in the upstairs hallway."
Shill's office says when the victim attempted to escape, the suspect in the hallway fired one shot which grazed the back of the victim’s head.
The victim was able to reach a neighbor's house and the suspects fled the scene.
Shill also says Hayes was previously indicted on May 6th for first-degree maintaining a narcotics production facility inside Showboat in Atlantic City.
The investigation into the home invasion remains open and active.
Hayes is currently being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
