Disclaimer: I've never actually been to a garage sale. Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts advertising both garage sales and yard sales on social media. Whether it's a community wide or personal garage sale, there are rules you have to abide by. Since I have never actually been to one I decided to do my research.

I want to try my best to go to one this summer. I've seen people get some great deals on amazing things at garage sales, so I need to check this scene out. After doing my do diligence, these are the rules to abide by at a South Jersey yard sale.

  • 1

    Don't make a mess.

If you are looking at a variety of things, put them back where you found them. This rings especially true for clothing. Tables filled with clothing can get messy really fast. Just be respectful.

  • 2

Don't expect a crazy amount of change.

Be reasonable. If you are only buying one item that costs $1, don't try to look like a high roller and hand over $100.

  • 3

    Returns are not a thing.

Avoid buyer's remorse by thinking about what you're buying before you hand over the moola. It is in poor taste to come back and try to make a return after you bought and left.

  • 4

Don't try to try on clothes.

Yes, you can try on a jacket, but there isn't a dressing room so be modest.

  • 5

    Don't over-do the haggling.

Be mindful of the prices. If something is already super marked down, don't nickel and dime the seller.

  • 6

Don't ask for them to hold and item.

Unless you purchased a big furniture item, don't ask them to hold something for you. If you need to go home and grab more money, don't expect the seller to hold an item for you. It would be a risk for them because they don't know if you are coming back or not.
